Welcome to the April installment of my Barn Quilt Block of the Month project! This is a personal challenge I decided to give myself in 2017 to keep pushing my pattern-making skills and add to my overall quilting abilities. Each month I’ll pick a cool barn quilt, turn it into an actual block, write up a pattern, and list it in my Craftsy shop.
This month’s block is Blackford’s Beauty! I also saw this one called Black Beauty and even Endless Chain, but Blackford’s Beauty seems to be the most common name. I came across versions in Tennessee, Wisconsin, Indiana and North Carolina and in each case, there were some differences. But while the corner units varied slightly, the chevron sides pointing to a center star remained the same.
Despite appearances, this block is pretty simple to piece and I threw in a trick to make constructing the checkerboard corners a little easier. The pattern has all the information you need to make a 12″ block and is only $2!

Eight blocks left in my barn quilt sampler!

Great colors; it reminds me of dogwood blossoms blooming along the Tennessee river in spring.
