This week I’m excited to be hosting my first link party ever as part of TGIFF — Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday! The quilt I’m sharing has really been a long time coming. I’m not exaggerating when I say this finish has been in work for more than a year and a half.
So yeah. THANK GOODNESS!
But before I bury the lede:
The Broken Zig Zag quilt pattern is now available in my shop!
Several years ago when I started writing quilt patterns, I designed one called Broken Zig Zag based on this free-use pattern by Claudio Guglieri. At the time, my pattern was based on making lots of half square triangles. I never actually made the quilt — at the time, my pattern writing was more of a development exercise — but I made it available for free, and a handful of quilters did use the pattern with success!

In summer 2018, I had the opportunity to make something with Libs Elliott’s Mixtape fabric collection, and I chose to revisit my Broken Zig Zag pattern. I reworked it to be a wall hanging instead of throw size. And more importantly, I changed the construction method to piece rectangles together so that I could 1) reduce the overall number of seams in the quilt top and 2) use larger pieces of fabric instead of having each section of the same fabric cut up into three different parts.

Both of these changes give the quilt top a more streamlined appearance and I really liked the result. So I decided to update my pattern with the new construction method — and also make a few other updates and improvements now that I have a few years of pattern writing experience under my belt!
I held onto the photos of my finished wall hanging until I updated the pattern.
But then I never updated the pattern.
And so I’ve never actually posted this punchy, graphic, colorful wall hanging…until today!
I’m happy to finally share this finish, and share that the “finally finished” pattern is now available in my shop! This is a fun pattern that comes together quickly, and provides a lot of opportunity to play with color. Solid fabrics would be gorgeous, but as you can see the design lends itself well to playing with prints too.
(An important note on fabric prints: non-directional prints work best, but I do include tips for using directional prints. If you use any directional prints, as I did with my Christmas quilt, you’ll need a bit more fabric for each of those.)

The stats:
- Wall hanging measures 25″ x 30″. The pattern has instructions for a 60″ x 72″ throw size like my Christmas quilt as well.
- Fabrics are from the Mixtape collection by Libs Elliott for Andover Fabrics.
- Backing is a mottled dark blue I had left over from the backing of this quilt.
- Machine quilted with a walking foot using Aurifil 50 wt (teal blue).
- Binding is more Mixtape by Libs Elliott.

(This photo was taken in October 2018. OMG my kids look so much smaller!)
Now it’s your turn to share a great finish! I can’t wait to see what you’ve been working on this week. Feel free to link to a blog post, Facebook, Instagram, or anywhere else you like to share. And if you want to learn more about TGIFF and host a link party yourself, find all the details here.
That is such a cute quilt! Your changes sound like it will be faster to make too.
Yes, definitely! It’s stitch-and-flip now instead of making a bunch of HSTs.
how fun – you have cute quilt holders
Thanks! They think it’s really fun to “hide” behind the quilt, and then stick an arm or a foot out from the side. Lol.
Hi Sarah! Really nice quilt to share on this Finished Friday. And your quilt holder helpers are adorable. Isn’t it fun to look back at pictures of the littles and then to see them in your mind now?! Thanks for hosting this week’s linky party. ~smile~ Roseanne
It’s hard for me to remember they were ever a different age than they are now!!
Pretty quilt! Love those colors, and the cute holders too
Thanks Frederique!
That’s a great quilt and pattern. Congratulations on the pattern. Thanks for hosting Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday.
