Well, it’s 10:25 on Friday night and in another 95 minutes the government goes into partial shutdown. Again. And I join the hundreds of thousands of federal workers who get furloughed for Christmas.
The good news is that if it’s short, there won’t really be much of an impact since the next two days are weekend days, and the two after that are holidays. Things won’t really start to hit the fan unless it lasts past Christmas — but since I assume the White House and Congress will be taking a break for the holidays as well, who really knows how long it will go?
Since I had already planned to take the next couple weeks off, there’s a scenario where this mess actually works in my favor. If the government stays shut down, I don’t have to use my annual leave and would therefore still have it to use sometime in the future. And if federal employees are given backpay for the furlough days (as we usually are), I actually end up MAKING money out of this.
How’s THAT for bizarre?
- I don’t have to go to work.
- But I also don’t have to use my paid time off.
- And I will likely still get paid in the end.
I feel like this just underscores the ridiculousness of the whole shutdown thing.
Sigh.
p.s. I’m doing a 31 day blog writing challenge!
