Years ago when I first started quilting, I pinned an image of a plus quilt. It seemed like a modern classic to me and has been on my list ever since, so it’s with great pleasure that I can finally say that I made one! I gifted it over the weekend to my brother-in-law Alex and his wife Krystle who are expecting a baby boy in the next few weeks — a new nephew for me, and the first boy grandchild for my mother-in-law after two girls in Emma and Charlotte.
The fabric is from a fat quarter bundle of Kujira and Star by Rashida Coleman Hale for Cotton + Steel. I loved the blues and teals — and the whales are so cute! The collection also has a subtle Japanese theme, which is fitting since Krystle’s brother lives in Okinawa and they have traveled there to visit him. I used this free Plus Quilt pattern download from For the Love of George, picked my 9 favorite fat quarters from the collection, and got to work. Simply sewing squares and rectangles into rows made this a really nice and easy sew.
The backing is an Asian-inspired koi fish print that I picked up at Joann’s, where I discovered a new collection of premium quilt cotton! There were several nice patterns, and the fabric feels nice and soft. I’m pretty excited to have more options that I can get locally, since none of the quilt shops closest to me have much in the way of modern prints.
Looking forward to meeting my new nephew soon!

This is lovely; Rashida’s line seems perfect for a quilt for a little boy. I hope he gets a lot of joy, love, and years of play with the quilt.
