Jose and I flew home last Thursday evening after 6 awesome and relaxing days in Belize! This was our first kid-free vacation since Charlotte was born and the break was sorely needed. We debated several different Caribbean locations but ultimately decided to go back to Belize. We went to Placencia 8 years ago on our honeymoon, and this time we chose to explore Ambergris Caye. Both locations are on the water, but Ambergris Caye is much closer to the barrier reef.
We stayed at the Victoria House resort about 2 miles south of San Pedro. It was close enough that we could easily get into town by bike, golf carts, or taxi while also feeling a bit more removed than the hotels and rental properties right in town. We arrived on Friday evening and spent Saturday relaxing and exploring the shops in San Pedro. On Sunday we went snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley — which lived up to its name as we swam right next to dozens of nurse sharks and sting rays. We spent Monday and Tuesday relaxing at the resort, and took a water taxi to nearby Caye Caulker for a few hours. On Wednesday, our last full day, we went snorkeling at Mexico Rocks and then tooled around San Pedro for a few hours on a golf cart, which is just ridiculously fun. Alas, on Thursday we had to fly home but by that point we were thoroughly relaxed and well-rested and happy to see our girls again.
Even though we’ve now been to Belize twice, I won’t be surprised at all if we decide to go there again in the future! It’s close to home, relatively affordable, and awesomely tropical. Until we meet again, Belize!
