I’m so excited to finally share my L Is For… quilt, which was published today as the Modern Quilt Guild’s Quilt of the Month for May! I’ve been keeping this one a secret for several months now and finally having it released into the world feels great.
(If you’re an MQG member, you can find it in your inbox. If you’re not a member, you can get access to it by joining the guild!)
This quilt began last fall as one of my sketches for the 30 Days of Quilt Design challenge. I’m really drawn to geometric designs, and I liked how this design put a unique twist on a fairly standard shape so I decided to develop it a bit more to submit as a Quilt of the Month candidate. I was thrilled to hear in early October that it had been selected for 2017! I spent several weeks in February and March writing up the pattern and making my version — which will also be on display at QuiltCon next February in the Quilt of the Month exhibit!!
There are two basic mirror image rectangle blocks and based on the number of each and the orientation you choose, the options go on and on. My version is made with Kona cotton in Sky, Lake, Water, Surf and Nightfall and I used the same fabrics to make another giant L for the backing. I love how it looks in a monochromatic color scheme, but I also think it’d be fantastic in rainbow colors or even prints. You could even use a couple jelly rolls to minimize the cutting! I used Auriful 4655 (variegated blue) for the quilting, which simply echos all of the L shapes throughout the quilt.
So hooray! One of my secret sewing projects is officially no longer secret!! And there really aren’t enough exclamation points to convey my excitement at being part of the Quilt of the Month group this year. It’s an honor to be included!
p.s. Here are more of my quilt patterns.

Gorgeous! I especially like the optical illusion of depth. Congrats on being the Quilt of the Month!

Thanks Gretchen! I hadn’t really considered the depth perception thing when planning this one but yes — it was a nice side effect! 🙂
