Last night I finished up another mini quilt! This is the Hold Fast pattern by Kate Basti and I made it as a tester, but she’ll be releasing it for purchase later this week. It’s paper pieced and there are quite a few pieces involved to make the shape come out so well! I’d classify this as an intermediate-to-advanced pattern. If you’ve paper pieced before you should be just fine, but if you’re new to paper piecing I’d recommend starting with something simpler and tackling Hold Fast once you’ve gotten the hang of things.
I used some fat quarters from the Painter’s Canvas collection (by Laura Gun for Michael Miller) that I had in my stash. This fabric comes in a ton of different colors and is such a perfect tone-on-tone choice. I really love using this type of fabric — it reads almost like a solid, but with so much more texture.
Every time I paper piece, I am reminded that the technique can be so frustrating but also so rewarding! I consider myself a pretty advanced user when it comes to this technique — I’ve made many cool paper pieced things — but I still made a few mistakes along the way with this pattern that led to some frustrated seam ripping. It’s pretty much inevitable, I think. But the end result always justifies the little mistakes along the way!
The wavy lines are a perfect finishing touch. I agree, paper piecing takes a lot more patience for me. But taking a deep breath and slowing down is good for me, too.
Lovely finish!
