Welcome to the May installment of my Barn Quilt Block of the Month project! This is a personal challenge I decided to give myself in 2017 to keep pushing my pattern-making skills and add to my overall quilting abilities. Each month I’ll pick a cool barn quilt, turn it into an actual block, write up a pattern, and list it in my Craftsy shop.
This month’s block is Lucky Star, which I came across on a lovely little barn in Wisconsin. I really love the sense of movement in this block — to me, it looks like a pinwheel spinning in the breeze on a nice spring day. I’m trying to stay somewhat consistent in my color scheme for these barn quilt blocks but I couldn’t resist adding a new color this month with the dark red/orange. I think it really makes things pop and I’ll definitely use it again in a future block.
Get the Lucky Star Block pattern here!
This block is paper pieced, the pattern has templates for a 12″ block, and it’s only $2! I don’t include paper piecing instructions in the pattern, but there are plenty of great resources online to help you. One of my favorites is the paper piecing tutorial at Blossom Heart Quilts.
Seven blocks left in my barn quilt sampler!

I look forward to seeing all your blocks together at the end of the year!

This block is so pretty! Love the dark orange addition and I agree – it does look like a spinning pinwheel on a spring day. 🙂
