The story behind this quilt began last fall during the 30 Days of Quilt Design challenge on Instagram. As I skimmed through some of my Pinterest boards looking for ideas early in the challenge, I rediscovered this book cover by Jessica Hische. The intertwined elongated ovals looked like something that would lend itself well to a quilt, and thus the pattern you see here was born!
When I sketched the design back in September, I used rainbow colors but when I turned it into a full-size quilt in November (still in my “to be quilted” pile), I used a palette of navy and gray with bits of orange and turquoise. The idea of a rainbow didn’t leave me though, and the wheels in my head started turning when I saw Yvonne announce the Alison Glass linky party. I already had all of these fabrics in my stash — they’re all simply different colors of her Endpaper print. (I didn’t take a photo of the back, but it’s the same as the background and binding.) I love how vibrant the colors are, and how the subtle print gives the overall look a lot more texture.
I had to redo the quilt math to turn a throw-sized quilt into a mini but that was easy since I’d already done it once. The finish product measures 21″ square. I tried spiral quilting for the first time ever one this one and after a few fits and starts (more about that here), I was pretty happy with the overall result. It’s far from perfect — you can see several mistakes in this photo alone if you try! Still, I feel like it’s not too shabby at all for a first attempt and I looked forward to giving spiral quilting another go sometime soon.
(And how about that adorable photo assistant??)

I can definitely see how the inspiration translated into your design, and I like how you extended the lines and wove your shapes together. I really liked the first version you made, but this rainbow version is really stunning. I personally think you did a fantastic job on the spiral quilting (what quilting is ever perfect? well, not mine, anyway!). I’m so glad the linkup inspired you to come back to this and try it in your original rainbow color design. Thanks for linking up!

What a great design from your inspiration. I love that you used vibrant Alison Glass fabrics and the spiral quilting is a wonderful complement.

Thanks Sarah!

Rainbows are always awesome. One of the moda designers makes mini quilts first before committing to the full size quilt in order to test her pattern and fabric choices, I really like both of your quilts from this design. Good luck with the challenge.
