Sew Mama Sew is encouraging people to write about their favorite quilt this month, so I’m playing along!
Tell us about your favorite quilt. When did you make it? What pattern did you use? What fabrics?
I’ve only been quilting for 2 years so I haven’t made many, but my favorite is still Emma’s triangle quilt that I made almost a year ago for her 1st birthday. (I wrote several “in progress” posts about it back then.) I didn’t use a pattern since this was a simple design, but it was heavily inspired by this quilt that I came across online. I used solids in shades of teal, blue and purple from a couple Free Spirit Fabric fat quarter bundles, plus a two complementary patterns I had in my stash. The binding was a teal patterned fabric I found at Joann’s.
Have your shown it at any quilt shows or entered it in any contests?
No — it was made purely for my daughter! I’ve never shown a quilt or entered one in a contest, but it’s something I’m interested in doing someday.
What memories or people does the quilt make you think of?
I’m sure I’ll make many more quilts in my lifetime, but I won’t be surprised if this one is always my favorite because it’s the first thing I made for Emma! I’m glad that I get to see it in use every evening. I dragged my feet forever on actually making her something because I wanted it to be juuuust right — which is kind of backwards, but that’s how my brain works sometimes.
What do you like best about the quilt?
Teals, blues, and purples? Yes please. It’s my favorite color scheme! Although the pattern would work with basically any color choices, I love how the fabrics I already had came together so beautifully.
How did you grow as a quilter while making it?
I actually wrote a whole post about this back when I was making the triangle quilt! I honed several skills while making it — everything from dumb stuff like not ramming my needle into the presser foot (because I forgot to center it) to how to properly nest my seams.
If you could make this quilt again, what (if anything) would you do differently?
Nothing. I love it. Ok, maybe I would perfect my machine binding technique so the binding would look perfect. But otherwise, nothing.
Where is the quilt now?
It’s in Emma’s crib, being happily used by my little girl!

You’ve only been quilting for 2 years? Wow, that is a masterpiece for a “novice”.
