(Building 1 at JSC on Wednesday morning after dropping Emma at daycare)
Well it’s Day 4 of the furlough. Here’s what I’m not doing today:
- I’m not participating in telecons with NASA’s Russian counterparts to discuss the impacts of recent issues and how to resolve them.
- I’m not supporting various parts of the Certification of Flight Readiness process, which would help the International Space Station program get ready to support next month’s Soyuz and Progress launches.
- I’m not reviewing updates and changes to ISS emergency operations procedures, which the crew would use in the event of a fire, toxic spill or depressurization.
- I’m not continuing my work for the Public Affairs Office to develop a long-term strategy for social media use across all the projects and programs at JSC.
- I’m not helping inform the public about all the cool things their tax dollars are funding via JSC’s Twitter accounts.
- I’m not finalizing plans for a Google+ Hangout between an astronaut and students from the 3 universities he attended.
Here’s what my husband is not doing:
- He’s not getting on a plane to fly to Moscow.
- Therefore, he’s not going to spend next week at a Technical Interchange Meeting with NASA’s Russian counterparts discussing short-term and long-term trajectory planning for the ISS.
Come on Congress. Get your act together already.

Sarah,
Whenever you are again authorized to work, I am still a grad student at the University of Illinois in the Aerospace Engineering Department. I can easily help you connect to the Aerospace Department.
