There are two things strangers always comment on when they see Emma — her pretty blue eyes and “all that hair!” She’s had both since birth, although a lot of her hair did fall out around the 3-4 month mark. Since then, a new layer has been growing back in.
When it comes to hairstyles, she’s had quite the baby mullet going on for months. She basically has two layers of hair in the back — the stuff she was born with, which is several inches long, and the newer stuff, which curls around the nape of her neck. It doesn’t look too bad in these photos because Jose was combing it, but most of the time it just looks really scraggly.
So on Saturday morning, Jose and I finally decided it was time to give Emma her first haircut. As I sat there poised with the scissors in my hand, the simple act of snipping some hair suddenly felt almost traumatic. The longest stuff in the back has been there since birth! I choked up for a quick second and nearly reconsidered our plan.
But instead, I took a deep breath, gathered the longest stuff into a little ponytail, and lopped it off. Now instead of a mullet, she has a little pixie cut! And I have to admit, it looks pretty cute.
I didn’t trim her bangs — partly because she was really squirmy and I didn’t want to poke an eye out, and partly because I’m not sure I want her to have bangs at all. I want to let it grow out, but I also need to figure out a better way to keep it out of her face. (Clips don’t seem to stay in very long.)
Farewell, baby mullet. I will miss you.

Her hair is adorable! It looks professional.
Isla’s bangs would be down well below her chin if I hadn’t been cutting them. I think I’ve cut them 6 or more times!
