Yesterday we took Emma to her first baseball game! I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I can’t remember the last time I went to an Astros game. I know I didn’t go to a single one last year — although we did go to two Sugarland Skeeters games — and it’s possible I didn’t even go to one in 2011. I definitely haven’t been since the new Dynamo stadium opened a few blocks away from the Astros, and they’re already in their second season there. In fact, the internet tells me that the groundbreaking on that stadium was in early 2011…so yeah, the last Astros game I attended was probably in 2010.
How did I become such a bad fan? And how did the Astros become such an awful team? The rise in their awfulness definitely has something to do with my decline in attendance…but still.
ANYWAY! The point is that I finally went to another game, and Emma came along for the ride. We met up with Jen, Jason and Debbie and while the Astros got blown out by the Mariners (geez they are in the American League now — so weird) we still had a fun time
Emma loves to people watch, so a baseball game is basically the ideal scenario for that. She had a lot of fun watching the lights on the scoreboard, dancing each time music played, and smiling at the two very amenable ladies sitting behind us.
We were at the ballpark for 2.5 hours and actually saw a lot more of the game than I expected since Emma was content to sit on our laps and just check things out. She started to get tired around the 5th inning, and that made her super squirmy, but we managed to stick around through the end of the 6th. At that point the score was 10-0 and we were having zero success in getting Emma calmed down enough to potentially take a catnap in our arms, so we called it a day and headed out.
It’s really cool to take Emma to different places these days. Even though she won’t remember this stuff when she gets older, she’s still aware of what’s going on — she knows she’s doing something different, and it’s fun to watch her eyes dart around just taking everything in.
We’ll be back — and hopefully the Astros will improve their game!
