Last week I got to speak to the STS-135 JSC Tweetup in Mission Control. Thirty tweeps were lucky enough to have their name drawn to spend the day flying the space shuttle simulator and touring all the cool JSC facilities. The shuttle had just undocked from the station earlier that morning, and you can see that the console in the front center of the room is dark because the Rendezvous team had finished all of its work for the mission.
Right in the middle of my MCC overview, the group got a phone call from astronaut Ron Garan…who happens to be in space at the moment on the ISS. He’s a prolific tweeter, and let’s just say a phone call from space TOTALLY overshadowed anything I had been saying. Everyone ran to the back of the viewing room and gathered around the phone. Even though I mock-complained about being interrupted, I must admit it was pretty dang cool.
After the official Tweetup ended, a lot of the participants headed over to a local wine bar for dinner and drinks. I was able to go over for a couple hours, and Lynn snapped this photo of me while I was talking to someone else. (Lynn came to the Tweetup all the way from the Netherlands! Wow!) And no, I have no idea what’s going on with my weird alien hand.
Hooray for tweeps! They are a fun bunch.
