Welcome to the July installment of my Barn Quilt Block of the Month project! This is a personal challenge I decided to give myself in 2017 to keep pushing my pattern-making skills and add to my overall quilting abilities. Each month I’ll pick a cool barn quilt, turn it into an actual block, write up a pattern, and list it in my Craftsy shop.
This month’s block is Skyrocket, which I first came across in a photo from Scott County, Kentucky. That version features a two-toned checkerboard center but as I dug a little more, I found other versions of this block that include a central star. My take combines the best of both! Despite liking my final design, I had a tough time picking colors for this block and must have changed my mind at least a dozen times before finally settling on this palette of orange, yellow, and light blue.
Get the Skyrocket Block pattern here!
This block is paper pieced, the pattern has templates for a 12″ block, and it’s only $2! I don’t include paper piecing instructions in the pattern, but there are plenty of great resources online to help you. One of my favorites is the paper piecing tutorial at Blossom Heart Quilts.
Five more to go!

I really like the addition of the central star! I know color choices and placement can take a while to settle on, and it was worth the time. It is lovely!
