I finished this quilt (the 3rd of the 4 quilts I started in August) but have held off posting about it because I didn’t want to spoil a surprise. This one was for my new nephew Thomas and I finally got to deliver it in person a few days ago!
The design was based off another West Elm product, although not a rug this time but rather a canvas print. (Proof again that quilting inspiration is everywhere!)
The fabrics are all from the Little Ark collection by Carina Gardner for Riley Blake. I started with a jelly roll and added three matching Kona cotton solids in buttercup, leprechaun and cadet (i.e. yellow, green and blue). I loved all the little animals, and the colors would work for boys and girls, even though I knew Thomas was going to be a boy.
I made a miscalculation while working on the top for this one, and found myself with only 24 pairs of triangles instead of the 25 I needed to make a square quilt. I only had tiny scraps left from the jelly roll at that point — not enough — so I pulled my own Tim Gunn “make it work” moment by adding two solid triangles!
I quilted a pair of lines on either sides of the diagonal seams and the horizontal seam between each row.
I hope Thomas enjoys it for years to come!
